Liverpool captain and midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted that it will be a huge accomplishment if the Reds beat Manchester United at Old Trafford but that fact that he will be wearing the armband is not a major deal.
Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to the Theatre of Dreams on Thursday evening for the second leg of their Europa League clash with the Red Devils. Last week’s first leg saw Liverpool secure a comfortable 2-0 win thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino.
However, United have proven that they can come back from adversity on numerous occasions this season, so the tie is far from over. Henderson, though, is looking for a strong performance from his teammates and potentially record a famous victory at their closest rivals home.
“It would mean an awful lot to the team and also to the fans,” the 25-year-old is quoted as saying on Liverpool’s official website. “It won’t necessarily mean anything that I’m captain, it’s just that it’s more important that we win really. That’s the most important thing – it doesn’t matter about any individual. It matters about how we come here and perform. I’m sure if we perform like we did last week then we’ll have a very good, positive outcome at the end of it and move onto the next round.”
This will be Liverpool’s first visit to Old Trafford under the guidance of Klopp and they will be hoping that United can’t secure their third straight victory at the venue against the Merseysiders. Louis van Gaal has only lost against Liverpool once as Red Devils manager with that loss coming in the game last week.
