Liverpool knock Manchester United out of the Europa League

Manchester United suffered their second European exit of the season on Thursday evening and the fans could not hide their disappointment on social media.

Marouane Fellaini's performance agitated the supporters who couldn't understand Louis van Gaal's decision to start the midfielder and they were left further incensed when Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho killed the tie off before the end of the first half.

Guillermo Varela was ridiculed for his failure to deal with Liverpool's midfield maestro and before we knew it once again there was the suggestion that Van Gaal was turning into David Moyes.

Varela wasn't the only player to be blamed for the defeat either. BT Sport pundit Paul Ince was not impressed with the way David de Gea let in Coutinho's goal and it seemed as if there was no-one made exempt from the ire of the supports and club legends alike. Ince said on BT Sport: 'It's a sucker punch. David de Gea doesn't do himself any favours. He turns his head away from it.'

The substitutions made by Manchester United's boss left fans scratching their head as they chased the game in the second half, when he replaced both of his full backs with his side needing three goals in order to progress to the next stage of the Europa League.

Van Gaal admitted this was his side's best chance of reaching the Champions League next term and they now face the daunting prospect of being out of all cup competitions by the end of March, with the FA Cup now their last hope of silverware, where they have a quarter-final replay scheduled against West Ham.

If they lose the Manchester derby on Sunday, that really would put a dent in their league ambitions and the players will certainly need to regroup if they are to avoid defeat against two bitter rivals in the same week.
