Liverpool are no strangers to ill-judged social media output. Who can forget the tweet of the Liver birds emerging from the smoking Twin Towers on the anniversary of 9/11 or the photo of Brendan Rodgers chatting to the ghost of Bill Shankly?
Lately, the Reds seemed to be doing better, but that changed today after the passing of Johan Cruyff.
While most clubs passed on their condolences and celebrated the achievements of one of the greatest footballers to ever live, Liverpool opted to dig out a Cruyff quote in which he praised them and use that as their tribute.
One of those occasions when self-promotion was not what was required.
