Arsene Wenger reveals summer transfer plans and Arsenal fans will not like it
The Frenchman has refused to give up on the title even though his side could be 16 points behind leaders Leicester when they kick off against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
But unless the Foxes suffer a Devon Loch-style late collapse, Arsenal will fail to win the title for a 12th consecutive year.
Discontentment has been rumbling among the Gunners fans following yet another Champions League defeat at the last 16 stage and the failure to defend the FA Cup.
But asked if he expected to make lot of changes in the summer, he said: “No. If you look at the top three teams, you will see they have not changed their team a lot.
“We have to strengthen our squad but it’s not obvious to find the players despite the money the English clubs will have. Of course we will work very hard to do that. We are already working. But we have to find the players and that is not easy.
“The core is not good enough? That’s an outside point of view. We have again to analyse it in an objective way. And this team has won many games and the quality of many games was at top level.
” Arsenal have finished above Spurs for the last 20 years – including every season under Wenger - but now trail their local rivals by six points with a game in hand.
“First of all we are not behind Spurs yet,” he said. “Tottenham has been 18 years behind us and they survived. Let’s be realistic.
” Fourth place would not be enough to qualify for the Champions League if City win the competition this season and finish outside the top four – or if Liverpool win the Europa League.
“It could happen, but let’s be in the position No.3, No.2 or No.1,” Wenger said.
“It’s tight. We have to look behind us because everybody is chasing. But, as well, there could still be twists and turns before the end. We want to fight to still put pressure on teams in front of us.
